About Us[ENG]

The University of Tokyo Press (UTP) was founded in 1951, as an incorporated foundation attached to the University of Tokyo. Against the background and with the support of one of Asia’s leading academic institutions, the Press has published more than 8,100 titles, including scholarly research monographs, teaching materials, and works for a general readership. The Press’s Japanese-language list covers a large and growing variety of academic fields, including literature, philosophy, fine arts, linguistics, history, anthropology, education, sociology, economy, marketing, law, politics, geography, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer and information science. It was a pioneer of English-language scholarly publishing in Asia, issuing English-language titles in a variety of subjects beginning in its earliest years.

The Press plays an important role in the publishing community in Japan, as a core member of the Association of Japanese University Presses, the Japan Book Publishers’ Association, and the Japan Publishing Organization for Information Infrastructure Development. UTP is a member of the Association of University Presses (formerly the Association of American University Presses), and many of its English publications are available through Columbia University Press.
